Chawan Festival Lecture
I attended a lecture called "The Beginning of Tea Ceremony." The lecturers gave us a bowl filled with tea leaves and poured hot water into it to make a hand-brewed tea. The tea leaves came from Sun Moon Lake in Nantou. This lecture had two themes: 1. The Tea Ceremony 2. The Meaning and Story of the Chawan.

About the Chawan Festival

The Taiwan International Chawan Festival is a prestigious triennial event that has successfully returned for its third edition in 2025. Despite past disruptions due to the pandemic, the organizing committee successfully expedited preparations to resume its mission of promoting Taiwan’s unique "Heart Culture."

Rooted in the philosophy of "using exceptional bowls to savor premium tea," the festival's journey began over a decade ago, culminating in the inaugural event in 2019. Guided by the core principle of "One is All," the festival defines the formal rituals of the Taiwan Chawan Ceremony. It continues to serve as a decisive platform for fostering international exchange and achieving a vision of global well-being through ceramic artistry.

How the Chawan Festival has gained international influence

"Taiwanese Chawan Tea Ceremony," through years of evolution and refinement, has continuously integrated and innovated, combining various media such as floral art, music, crafts, calligraphy, and painting. It showcases Taiwan's unique cultural style in the most confident and natural way, presenting contemporary Taiwanese craftsmanship and art forms. The "Taiwan International Chawan Festival" aims to provide the best opportunity for international exchange and promotion of Taiwanese tea art and ceramic culture through a series of arts and cultural activities.

The 3rd Chawan Festival: "The Universe of Bowls" - Each ceramic artist's worldview reveals a unique skill and aesthetic, much like the galaxy in the universe, where some stars shine brightly, some are hazy and indistinct, some are colorful, and some are dark and profound. But they are not solitary existences; rather, they are eternal beings that influence each other.

The second annual Chawan Festival, themed "The Flow of Goodness," embodies the energy of a virtuous cycle. Starting from a heart that cherishes the land, tea farmers cultivate fine tea, and potters craft exquisite bowls. Through the gentle pouring and serving of tea, one can experience the sweetness and beauty of a bowl of fragrant tea. Offering a bowl of tea breaks down barriers during the pandemic, conveying goodwill between people, and thus ensuring the continuous flow of goodness in the world.

2019 marked the first edition of the festival and the beginning of Taiwan's Chawan culture connecting with the international community. The Chawan Festival aims to provide friends around the world who love pottery and tea art with the experience of the fragrance from Taiwan's tea mountains through the "Chawan"—a simple yet highly expressive vessel. Rich in historical craftsmanship, the Chawan also represents the crystallization of earth and fire in contemporary art. It allows participants to immerse themselves in the rich culture and aesthetics of Taiwan through a single bowl of tea.
